Establishment of the British Empire in India in  1757  AD . It is considered to be because in the same year ,  Clive established the East India Company as a political force by defeating the Nawab of Bengal at the Battle of Plassey.

Causes of the Battle of Plassey

(1)  Conspiracy of the British against Siraj-ud-daulah -

The British   conspired to remove the Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-daulah, from power ,  because the British wanted to make the Nawab a puppet in their hands. For this, the British  joined the Nawab's commander Mir Jafar  by luring him to make him the Nawab of Bengal. The British had already taken court nobles like Amichand and Jagat Seth on their side. The British were very clever ,  so they found out the rich people who were angry with the Nawab and got them on their side too. For this reason Nawab Siraj-ud-daulah's army did not fight with complete loyalty in the field of Plassey.

(2)  Tension between the British and Nawab Sirajuddaulah -

There was tension in the relations between the British and Siraj-ud-daulah. There were many reasons for this ,  in which the British did not send any gift to Siraj-ud-daulah when he became the Nawab of Bengal ,  the British used to give help and shelter to the rebels of the Nawab ,  the Nawab had imposed strict restrictions on the business of the British.

(3)  Fortification by the British -

At this time the British and the French started the fortification of Calcutta and Kasim Bazar. Sirajuddaulah opposed it. The French obeyed the Nawab's order ,  but the British, ignoring him, continued the fortification ,  which angered the Nawab.

 (4)  Right on Kasim Bazar and Calcutta -

Enraged by the fortification by the British, the Nawab won by sending his army to Kasim Bazar and Calcutta. Many Britishers were also taken prisoner.

5)  The incident of the dungeon -

The Nawab locked many Englishmen in a tight cell ,  as a result of which many Englishmen died. This incident is famous in history  as ' Kaal Kothari '  (Black Hole) .

 war of Plasi

Clive  soon prepared a plan of conspiracy against the Nawab ,  but the foolish Nawab was completely unable to understand the diplomatic tricks of the British. If his eyes had opened in time and he would have been Mir. Had Jafar ,  Amichand etc. been taken prisoner ,  the British might never have been successful in their conspiracy. On June 12, 1757,  Mir Jafar sent a letter to Clive informing him that he could now initiate direct action against the Nawab. Soon Clive wrote a letter to Siraj-ud-daulah and threatened war by making several allegations against him. Nawab's eyes opened after receiving the letter . But now the situation was out of his hands. Still he decided to fight with the British. Soon he reached the field of Plassey with Mir Jafar with the army. There were 50  thousand soldiers in his army  . Here Clive also came to the field of Plassey with the army. At first Clive was horrified to see the Nawab's huge army ,  but he was satisfied by seeing his colleague Mir Jafar in the army. As soon as Mir Jafar signaled, Clive attacked the Nawab's army.  The Battle of Plassey began on June 23, 1757 . The Nawab's army fought with great valor and courage ,  But in the end she was defeated. Mir Jafar silently watched the Nawab's defeat. He did not participate in the war. Now the Nawab came to know about his betrayal. He tried to escape from the battlefield to save his life ,  but was captured and killed by Miran, the son of Mir Jafar. Thus ended the historic Battle of Plassey, fought with treachery and cunning.

Significance of the Battle of Plassey

The Battle of Plassey has historical significance in Indian history. Due to this war, the British were able to establish their rule in India. The success of Plassey and the conquest of Bengal made the efforts of the British successful in the subsequent conquest of North India. Plassey greatly increased the power and resources of the British. As a result, the Company had no difficulty in defeating Nawab Shujauddaulah of Awadh and Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II in the Battle of Buxar. If Plassey's decision was against the British ,  then the establishment of their power in North India would have become doubtful.
