Eid ul-Azha, also known as the " Festival of the Sacrifice ", is an important religious festival celebrated by Muslims around the world. It commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. The festival is based on a story narrated in the Quran, the holy book of Islam.
According to Islamic tradition, Prophet Ibrahim had a dream in which he saw himself sacrificing his sons as a form of devotion to God. At divine command, Ibrahim prepared to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael). However, at the last moment, by command of Allah (God), Ismail was replaced by a sheep, symbolizing that the sacrifice was complete.
Muslims acknowledge Eid-ul-Adha for the faith, devotion and respect for God portrayed by Ibrahim and his son Ismail. The festival also marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage, an annual Islamic pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and it is mandatory for all financially and physically able Muslims to perform Hajj once in their life.
During Eid-ul-Azha, Muslims usually gather for congregational prayers in mosques or open prayer grounds. They offer special prayers, recite sermons, and hold important thoughts of renunciation, faith, and obedience to Allah (God). One of the central rituals of the festival involves the sacrifice of an animal, usually a goat, sheep, cow or horse, following the example of the Prophet Ibrahim. Three parts are made of the meat of the animal killed, one part is kept for the family, one is given to relatives and friends, and the remaining part is given to the poor and friends, emphasizing the importance of charity and sharing Are being given.
Eid al-Adha is a time of joy, gratitude and unity for Muslims around the world, as they celebrate their faith and come together to remember the teachings and example of Prophet Ibrahim.
