Breaking News: Horizontal drilling best for Uttarkashi rescue: NDMA
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Tuesday that the focus is on hori-zontal drilling to extri-cate all the 41 workers trapped inside the Silk-yara tunnel in Uttarka-shi and vertical drilling will only be the second-best option. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Uttarakhand chief min-ister Pushkar Singh Dhami for the fourth time on Tuesday to enquire about the ongo-ing rescue operations.
Briefing reporters on the rescue efforts, NDMA member Lt. Gen.
(Retd) Syed Atta Hasnain said that simultaneous efforts are being made on five fronts to save these trapped workers.
The “focus is on hori-zontal drilling”, as rock formation has created challenges for vertical drilling, he said.
Secretary of the ministry of road transport and highways Anurag Jain said that under the current circumstances “vertical drilling is the second-best option”.
The new six-inch wide pipeline will be used to provide warm food and medicines to trapped workers, Lt. Gen.
Hasnain further said.
Currently, the survival ration is being provided to the workers through the four-inch-wide
