OpenAI outgoing chief Sam Altman is set to join backer Microsoft in a sur-prise turn ofevents for the start-up at the heart of an artificial intelligence boom.
The appointments, set-tled late into the night on Sunday , followed Altman’s abrupt departure just days earlier as chief exec-utive order of the ChatGPT maker and ended speculation that he could return.
Ex-Twitch boss Emmett Shear has been appointed to lead the company behind ChatGPT, replac-ing Altman following his shock sacking on Friday .
“I'm not crazy enough to take this job without board support for com-mercialising our awesome models,” Shear said, adding: “OpenAI’s stabili-ty and success are too important to allow tur-moil to disrupt them like this.”
OpenAI dismissed Altm-an on Friday following a ‘breakdown of communi-cations,’ according to an internal memo.
Microsoft chief execu-tive Satya Nadella said in posts on X that Altman would become chief exec-utive order of a new research group inside the software maker, along with other departing OpenAI colleagues such as outgoing president Greg Brockman who quit fol-lowing Altman’s ouster.
Microsoft, the one of the OpenAI investor, had sup-ported a return of Altman to the start-up, according to sources, a move that seemed likely only hours prior to Monday’s announ-cements. Teasing his expe-cted reconciliation with OpenAI’s board, Altman had posted an image of himself on X on Sunday wearing an OpenAI guest badge with the caption:
“first and last time i ever wear one of these.”
Nadella and Shear both said their companies remained committed to their partnership, while resources would go to Altman’s new group at Microsoft as well.
Meanwhile, OpenAI’s interim CEO vowed on Monday to hire an inde-pendent investigator to probe the abrupt ouster of co-founder Sam Altman and reform the manage-ment team over the next 30 days as he seeks to restore trust in the US start-up after a dramatic weekend.
“It’s clear that the process and communications around Sam’s removal has been handled very badly , which has seriously dam-aged our trust,” Emmett said in a post on X describ-ing his new job as a once-in-a-lifetime.
