Rafia Zakaria’s article “A Trump win may emasculate institutions” (12 January) reflects the apprehensions of a segment of the American population.

Today, the American electorate is a divided house. A series of national opinion polls have demonstrated that Donald Trump’s popularity has not declined. Unmindful of his unchecked presidential power and increasingly unapologetic and anti-democratic rhetoric, a clear majority of the electorate prefers him over Joe Biden.

Trump's previous stint as President was marked by attacks on democratic institutions, including the judiciary and the media which are critical checks and balances on the executive power; scant respect for the Constitution and the rule of law; unabashed promotion of personal interests above those of the country; irresponsible, inflammatory and incendiary rhetoric against immigrants, Muslims, women and other groups, communists and Marxists; and inconsistent domestic policies that unduly affected minorities and the poor. As of now, the twice impeached, quadruply indicted former president who is caught up in a web of civil and criminal lawsuits is running away with the Republican presidential nomination despite his track record. The Maine and Colorado rulings have disqualified Trump from running as a presidential candidate because of his actions around the Capitol insurrection. If the Supreme Court does not hold the ex-president accountable for his crimes, he might return to the White House again. Trump and the radicalized Republican Party have already undermined the public faith in the fairness of federal governance and the only way to restoring that faith is for the rule of law and democracy to prevail. Yours, etc.
