Communalism : Meaning, Cause, Effects

Meaning of communalism  ( what is sampradayikta )

sampradayikta arth karan dushparinam  ;

Communalism means the feeling of indifference, neglect, kindness, anti-hatred and attack towards other sects or sects other than one's own religious sect, the basis of which is the real or imaginary fear that the said sect will destroy our sect or threaten our life and property. Is determined to cause harm.

In broad sense, communalism is a narrow mental thinking which considers its own group as superior and tries to promote its interests. It can be based on any religion, caste, language, ethnic or regional basis, but in a certain sense the basis of communalism is religion. Communalism is actually a feeling of hatred among followers of different religions. Modern Indian society is most affected by the poison of communalism and casteism, which are actually derivatives (by-projects) of religion and caste.

Pro. In the words of Balraj Madhok, "The sect demands its special political rights and other rights at the expense of the national class or other religious classes of some religious classes."

Reasons for communalism in India

The reasons for communalism are as follows--

1. Historical reasons

Islam came to India from outside. Muslims established their rule here. With the help of power and sword, he started the process of forceful conversion of people. From this time onwards a feeling of opposition towards Muslims arose. Aurangzeb and other Muslim rulers forcibly converted many Hindus into Muslims. This created hatred towards Muslims in the minds of Hindus. Later, during the independence movement, the Muslim League was established by the Muslims and on the basis of their demand, the British accepted the demand for the creation of Pakistan from the religious point of view and divided the country, which many people did not like. Then at the time of partition, incidents of riots, arson and rape occurred and many Hindus became refugees in their own country.

2. Using Muslims as vote bank by political parties.

After independence, due to vote politics, Muslims were not able to join the mainstream of the nation. Due to their politics, some political parties tried to portray themselves as the most well-wishers of the Muslims so that they could get the votes of the Muslims. Congress had a monopoly on this vote bank for a long time. After this, Janata Party and Janata Dal broke this monopoly of Congress. At present, many parties calling themselves secular are trying to capture this vote bank. This politics of votes did not allow Muslims to join the stream of national harmony.

3. Economic backwardness of Muslims

This class remained economically backward since the British rule. Due to this backwardness this class could not be modernized. As a result, the air of new ideas could not enter this community and the Mullahs and Maulvis of Muslims did not allow this class to join the national mainstream and the politics of fatwas continued. Vote deals started being made by them with political parties.

4. Psychological reasons

Feelings of mutual hatred, opposition, hatred and separation have developed between the followers of Satya Sanatan and Islam. The reason for the development of these feelings is the misconceptions and prejudices that have been prevalent since ancient times. While Hindus express doubts about the national loyalty of Muslims, some Muslims also reinforce this doubt from time to time through their actions.

This has increased mutual distrust.

5. Religious intolerance

The basic principles of all the religions of the world are almost the same, but the tendency to consider one's own religion and religious principles superior and to consider other religions and its principles inferior has increased religious intolerance. This intolerance has been encouraged by religious leaders, clerics, priests etc. by teaching religious fanaticism to their followers. They consider it virtuous to kill followers of other religions and propagate their own religion. This has increased religious tensions and conflicts.

6. Cultural differences

Cultural differences also contribute significantly to the problem of communalism. There is a lot of difference in the lifestyle, food habits, customs, dress, ideology etc. of Hindus and Muslims. Hindus believe in corporeal God and worship idols, whereas Muslims believe in formless God. Hindu is monogamous, whereas Muslim is polygamous. There is no divorce and widow remarriage among Hindus, whereas there is divorce and remarriage among Muslims.

7. Vested interests of anti-social elements

Anti-social elements create a situation of tension and conflict for looting, sexual adultery and revenge. Such people spread communal hatred on various religious occasions. On occasions like Dussehra, Ramnavmi, Muharram, Eid etc. they create nuisance by throwing stones at processions or functions or other incidents. In such communal conflicts they easily satisfy their animal instincts.

8. Government's appeasement policy

The governments formed after independence adopted a policy of appeasement towards Muslims for the sake of vote bank politics. Most of the governments formed at the Center and in the provinces adopted the same policy. It is also unfortunate that these policies were adopted by governments that called themselves secular. These appeasement steps helped maintain the feeling of separation among Muslims.
