They studied these enzymes in a bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis (this bacteria can cause meningitis). They found that the enzyme cuts DNA in the same spot again and again. This helps the bacteria swap genes and change over time.

Even better—scientists found thousands of similar enzymes! Each one cuts DNA in its own special place.
