The ' African Union' (AU) has been formed on the lines of the European Union (EU) . The ' African Union ' came into existence on May 26, 2001, the very next day of Africa Day' (May 25) .  53-member Organization of African Unity (OAU) under the Constitutive Act of the African Union (CAAU) accepted in Lome (Togo) in July, 2000      Transformed into 'African Union'. It was provided in this charter that 'O.A.U.' The 'African Union' will come into existence after 30 days of due ratification by 36 nations out of 53 members of the African Union. The 36th nation to ratify the charter was Nigeria, which ratified it on April 26, 2001. Thus the 'African Union' came into existence on 26 May 2001, 30 days after Nigeria's ratification. It is noteworthy that the Charter of the 'Organization of African Unity' was accepted on May 25, 1963 in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), which was signed by the heads of state of 32 African countries . In this context, May 25 is celebrated as ' African Day '. The African Unity Association, established in 1963, ran successfully for 38 years (1963 to 2001).    

The process of its transformation into an African Organization ' was initiated in the 'Sirte Declaration' accepted in Sirte (Libya) on September 9, 1999 (9-9-99). Its charter was later adopted at the Lome (Togo) conference in July 2000. On 8 July 2002, the organization's name was changed from the ' Organisation of African Unity ' to the 'African Union' at a summit held in Durban (South Africa). It is more powerful than '. In the context of social, economic, political changes taking place in the world, it has been formed with the aim of further strengthening the continental unity. The 'African Parliament' is the highest legislative body of the 'African Union'. This parliament is located in Midrand, South Africa. For this, 265 representatives are elected from all 53 member countries. The 'African Union' also has its own court, which tries to settle the mutual disputes of the member countries. Apart from this, the 'African Union' also has its own peacekeeping force, which has the right to intervene in the internal affairs of the member countries of the union. It made the first military intervention in May 2003 in the member country Barudi. 

India-Africa Forum
